Exterior Painting in Toronto: When to Paint and What to Expect

Exterior painting in Toronto requires more planning than interior work. Weather conditions, surface condition, paint selection, and timing all affect the final result in ways that do not apply indoors. This guide covers everything you need to know to approach an exterior painting project confidently.

The Best Time of Year for Exterior Painting in Toronto

Temperature and humidity are the two biggest constraints on exterior painting. Paint needs to be applied within a specific temperature range to adhere and cure properly — most exterior latex paints require surface temperatures between 10 and 32 degrees Celsius (50 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit) and ambient humidity below 85 percent.

In Toronto, this means the painting season runs roughly from mid-May through early October, with the sweet spot being late spring (May to June) and early fall (September to early October). Mid-summer can work well but very hot days can cause paint to dry too quickly, leading to lap marks and poor flow. Spring and fall offer moderate temperatures, lower humidity, and longer drying windows between coats.

Never paint in direct sunlight on hot days — always work in the shade of the building, following the sun around as needed. And never paint if rain is forecast within 24 hours or if dew is expected overnight.

Preparing the Exterior: The Most Important Step

On exterior projects, preparation often takes as long as the painting itself — and it determines whether your paint job lasts 8 years or 3 years. Proper exterior prep includes:

  • Pressure washing: Removing dirt, mildew, chalking from old paint, and any loose material. This step alone can dramatically improve paint adhesion.
  • Scraping and sanding: Any areas where old paint is peeling, bubbling, or flaking must be scraped back to a stable surface and sanded smooth. Painting over failing paint just transfers the failure to the new coat.
  • Caulking: All gaps at window and door frames, trim joints, and any penetrations through the siding must be caulked with a paintable exterior caulk before painting. This prevents water infiltration and maintains the seal that keeps the paint system intact.
  • Priming: Bare wood, repaired areas, and any surface with significant stains or colour changes should be primed before the topcoat is applied.

Choosing the Right Exterior Paint for Toronto Climate

Toronto weather — hot humid summers, freeze-thaw cycles in spring and fall, cold winters — is demanding on exterior paint. Premium exterior latex paints from manufacturers like Benjamin Moore (Aura Exterior) or Sherwin-Williams (Emerald Exterior) are engineered specifically for this kind of climate stress. They provide better UV resistance, better flexibility to handle thermal movement, and better moisture resistance than economy-grade products.

The upfront cost difference between premium and economy paint is relatively small compared to the overall project cost — and the performance difference in terms of longevity is significant. A good paint job with premium products on a properly prepared surface should last 8 to 12 years in Toronto conditions.

What the Painting Process Looks Like

A professional exterior painting project typically unfolds over two to four days for a typical Toronto home. Day one is usually pressure washing and allowing time to dry. Day two is prep — scraping, sanding, caulking, priming. Day three and potentially day four is painting — typically two full coats of topcoat on all surfaces. At the end of the job, expect a full cleanup of the property and a walkthrough inspection to catch any areas needing touch-up.
