Hamilton Neighbourhood Guide: Popular Exterior Paint Colours by Area

Hamilton is one of Canada most architecturally interesting cities — a place where Victorian brick rowhouses stand a few streets from postwar bungalows, Craftsman-style character homes, and modern infill builds. Because the housing stock varies so dramatically by neighbourhood, so do the exterior colour choices that look most at home in each area. Here is a neighbourhood-by-neighbourhood look at what works where.

Westdale

Westdale streetscapes are defined by 1920s and 1930s character homes — brick and stucco Tudors, colonial revivals, and Arts and Crafts bungalows. The neighbourhood has a strong sense of architectural cohesion, and paint choices here tend to respect that heritage character.

Popular choices: Deep greens (Benjamin Moore Tarrytown Green HC-134, Sherwin-Williams Rookwood Dark Green SW 2809) are a natural fit for the period architecture. Warm whites and creams with contrasting dark wood tones work beautifully on the half-timbered Tudor styles. Brick homes often add painted trim and shutters rather than full exterior coverage — navy, charcoal, and deep burgundy are common accent colours.

Durand and Kirkendall

These central Hamilton neighbourhoods feature a mix of Victorian and Edwardian homes, many of which have been renovated in recent years. Colour choices here tend to be more confident and historically referenced — reflecting homeowners who have invested in the neighbourhood character.

Popular choices: Victorian exteriors support richer colour palettes than most modern homes. We see a lot of deep navy and slate blue with cream trim, warm terracotta with ivory, and charcoal grey with bright white — all choices that look distinctly different from the suburban palette and suit the period architecture. Benjamin Moore Historical Colours collection is a good starting point for these homes.

Ancaster

Ancaster newer construction tends toward larger homes with traditional or transitional architectural styling. Colour choices here lean toward broad-market appeal — clean, sophisticated neutrals that work well in listing photos and age gracefully.

Popular choices: Soft greige (Sherwin-Williams Agreeable Gray, Benjamin Moore Pale Oak) with bright white trim is extremely common. Deep charcoal and dark navy make a strong statement on larger homes with substantial trim detail. Board-and-batten accents in a contrasting neutral have become popular for adding dimension to larger facade areas.

Stoney Creek

Stoney Creek has a mix of older village-area homes and newer subdivisions. The older stock has more character and often benefits from period-appropriate colour choices; the newer areas trend toward the same neutral palettes popular across the GTA.

Popular choices: The older homes near Stoney Creek village centre often look best in traditional combinations — white or cream with green or blue-grey trim and shutters. Newer builds in suburban Stoney Creek follow the greige-and-white formula that dominates new construction across Ontario.

Hamilton Mountain

The Mountain is dominated by postwar bungalows and split-levels, with more recent subdivisions mixed in. Colour choices tend toward clean, classic neutrals.

Popular choices: Warm white and soft grey siding with white trim remains the most common choice and looks consistently clean and well-maintained. Homeowners looking to add some personality often use a bold front door colour (terracotta, navy, forest green) against an otherwise neutral palette — a very cost-effective way to add curb appeal without committing to full-exterior colour change.

Getting the Right Colour for Your Home

The architecture of your home and the street it sits on should always be the starting point for exterior colour selection. A deep Victorian colour on a 1970s bungalow can look out of place; a soft greige on a period Edwardian can feel generic. We always recommend looking at your immediate streetscape and neighbourhood context before deciding — and when in doubt, our colour consultation can help you find a choice that suits both the building and your personal taste.
